History

The idea for irefer.net started one day while I was seeing a client in my private practice. When my client asked me for a referral for couples therapy. I scrambled to find one. Sorting through my phone contacts, business cards and scraps of paper was not only inefficient but also a bit embarrassing. Afterwards I thought, wouldn’t it be great if I could use my phone to instantly send referrals to my clients.

irefer.net evolved from there: first, instead of just sending a name and number, I can send full practice profiles with the option to notify the practitioner that they were just referred as well as a reciprocal thank you note. What started as a way of streamlining referrals has now become an indispensable interactive referral directory and networking tool. More importantly, now I can connect with the professionals I know and trust, thereby creating a collegial online community.

Meet Julie Cohen, LMFT/ Founder irefer.net

As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, I have always been interested in how mental health intersects with technology. Prior to irefer.net, I founded “links for shrinks,” the first online social networking community for mental health professionals. I was also a mental health advisor and blogger for the website DailyStrength.org.

Aside from my online work I have spent much of my career in private practice and community mental health in and around the Greater Los Angeles area.
